After one day of competition, the Denison men's track and field team is tied for sixth at the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship hosted by Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
Through six events, the Big Red has totaled 11 points. Sophomore Andy Shaw paced the Denison scoring following a fourth-place finish in the discus with a toss of 139'6". Shaw added another point to DU's total after taking eighth in the shot put with a heave of 41'9.25".
In the final event of the day, a pair of freshman distance runners tacked on five more points for the Big Red. Brian Myers and Sam Beech finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run. Myers completed the race in 33:31.49, while Beech clocked in at 33:38.46.
In the preliminaries, freshmen Jordan Patterson and Quenton Richards both qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash. Patterson won his heat and finished third overall after crossing the finish line at 11.18. Richards qualified with a time of 11.20 which landed him in sixth place. In addition to qualifying for the 100 finals, Patterson also advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash. The freshman placed fifth overall with a time of 22.42.
Wabash leads the nine-team field with 84.5 points, while Ohio Wesleyan (49.5), DePauw (28), Wooster (23) and Oberlin (14) round out the top five spots.
Saturday's field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m., while the running events are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
