In his first appearance in a combined event, Denison junior Drake Lohnes scored 4,635 points en route to a ninth-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference Decathlon on Sunday afternoon in Oberlin, Ohio.
Lohnes shined in the final two events of the day, recording a pair of top-4 finishes. In the javelin, he recorded a mark of 143'11" which landed him in fourth. The final event of the weekend was Lohnes' strongest of the event, the 1500-meter run. The DU junior set the pace in race with a time of 4:26.22.
Much like he did on Sunday, Lohnes also finished Saturday strong with a sixth-place showing in the 400-meter dash after clocking in at 55.44.
Ohio Wesleyan senior Aaron Port won the combined events title with 6,585 points, while Wabash seniors Matt Dickerson and Adam Wadlington were second (6,544) and third (6,324), respectively. The OWU duo of Tyler Jenkins (6,148) and Nate Newman (6,048) rounded out the top five.
Lohnes and the rest of the Big Red will return to action this weekend when Denison hosts the 2016 NCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The two-day event begins on Friday and will run through Saturday.
