GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison softball played to a doubleheader split with Oberlin College on Tuesday afternoon in Granville. The Big Red won the first game 6-1 before falling in game two, 5-3. The series split moves Denison to 17-11 on the season and 8-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Opening the day with a game one victory, the Big Red offense tallied six runs on 10 hits while the pitching performance of junior Taryn Welch kept the Yeowomen bats at bay. Totaling her 10th complete game of the season, Welch scattered nine hits for one run and recorded three strikeouts to improve to 8-5 on the season.
In the bottom of the second with the bases loaded, the Big Red broke the scoreless tie when Marrae Saucedo reached first base on a fielder's choice and Lindsey Clemson scored on a throwing error by Oberlin's Maddison Paladino to give DU a 1-0 lead.
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth Brennah Dutcher connected on a solo home run over the center field wall for her fifth of the season and to give the Big Red a 4-1 advantage. Laura Bagan followed with Denison's second solo blast of the game in the sixth and Fisher tallied an RBI single to left center as DU took a 6-1 lead in the seventh.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the seventh, Welch recorded the final out of the game to give the Big Red their eighth conference win.
Bagan's 3-for-3 performance led DU in game one as she finished with two runs scored and an RBI. Fisher added two RBIs while Dutcher, Clemson, Asher, and Claire Powell each scored a run.
In game two, Oberlin posted three runs on five hits through the first two innings to put DU in an early deficit, 3-0.
Still trailing in the fourth, the Big Red started to chip away at the Oberlin lead after Clemson scored on a sacrifice fly from Dutcher to make it a 3-1 game. Two batters later, Bagan scored Kovatch with a double to left center to bring Denison within one, 3-2.
After a single from Asher put runners on first and third, Gabi Dufresne tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly that scored Bagan. The game remained tied at 3-3 entering the fifth.
Following a pair of runs from Oberlin in the fifth, the Big Red were unable to secure the comeback as the Yeowomen took game two to split the doubleheader.
Denison starter Colleen Hoffman allowed three runs on seven hits in three innings of work. The loss was tagged to Sarah Hamre as she moved to 1-2 on the season. Oberlin's Dani Pechthalt earned the win to go to 3-2 on the year while starter Emily Tucci returned in the seventh to record the save.
Powell went 2-for-2 in game two while Bagan went 1-for-3 with an RBI. OC's Kat Ladouceur went 2-for-2 and Vianca Dagnino posted two hits and an RBI.
Denison will be back in action Saturday, April 27 when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for an NCAC doubleheader with Wittenberg University. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
