SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Denison softball travelled to Springfield, Ohio on Saturday afternoon where they played to a doubleheader split with Wittenberg University at Doughman Dillahunt Stadium. The Big Red suffered a 6-5 loss in game one before shutting out the Tigers in game two, 3-0.

Looking to rebound from a loss in game one, the Big Red received a dominant pitching performance from senior Colleen Hoffman in game two. Holding the Tigers to one hit in a complete-game effort, Hoffman posted four strikeouts on the day and allowed only one walk. The win moved Hoffman to 9-4 on the season.

The Big Red answered early for Hoffman in the top of the first when Lindsey Clemson tripled to right center and scored Claire Powell to take an early 1-0 lead.

Still holding to a one-run lead in the top of the third, senior Laura Bagan launched a two-run double to right field, scoring Clemson and Hoffman to increase their lead to 3-0.

Hoffman and Wittenberg's Katelyn Niswonger combined to allow only one hit over the final four innings of play as the final score remained in favor of the Big Red.

Niswonger took the loss as she allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Clemson led the Big Red with a 2-for-3 effort while adding an RBI and a run scored. Hoffman also tallied two hits and a run scored for DU.

In game one, Denison jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Tigers added a run in the first and another in the third to make it a 4-2 game after three innings.

An RBI double from Marrae Saucedo increased Denison's lead to 5-2 in the fourth, but the Tigers erupted for three runs in the sixth as the Big Red were unable to recover and took their fifth loss in conference play.

The pitching loss when to Taryn Welch as she allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. Witt's Cassidy Osborne earned the victory after posting one run on four hits in 6.1 innings.

Wittenberg's Elise Freeland and Missy Lee each finished with three hits in the first game and combined for three RBIs. Bagan led DU with two RBIs.

Denison will round out their regular season schedule on Sunday, April 28 when they host Allegheny College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
