GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison softball closed out the regular season on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny College, defeating the Gators 16-1 in game one before earning a 5-0 victory in game two. The Big Red will enter next weekend's NCAC Tournament with a 20-12 overall record while going 11-5 in conference play.
In game one, the Big Red posted 16 runs on 17 hits, including seven runs in the second inning. Senior Amanda Howell opened the inning with a solo home run over the left field wall to take the first lead of the game. Claire Powell, Lindsey Clemson, Laura Bagan, and Howell each added RBI singles to help DU tack on six more runs in the inning as they entered the third with a 7-0 advantage.
Leading 10-1 after three innings of action, the Big Red added six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, including RBI doubles from Howell, Powell, and Clemson.
While the offense stole the show, Denison's starter Taryn Welch displayed another impressive pitching performance for her ninth win of the season. In four innings of work, the junior allowed one run on three hits with three walks and posted five strikeouts.
Powell, Howell, and Clemson each recorded three hits in the first game, combining for eight total RBIs. Seven of the nine Big Red hitters finished with two runs scored.
Following an offensive explosion in game one, the day's second game opened as a pitcher's duel between Denison's Colleen Hoffman and Allegheny's Tori Vradenburg, who kept both sides hitless through the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third, Powell broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single up the middle that scored Emilie Fisher from second and put the Big Red ahead, 1-0.
After the Big Red tacked on another run in the fourth, the DU bats assisted Hoffman in the sixth when Marrae Saucedo tallied an RBI single to center and Ricki Asher launched a two-run double that added three runs in the inning and solidified the 5-0 win for Denison.
Hoffman earned her 10th win of the season after holding the Gators to just four hits with four strikeouts over six innings pitched. Sarah Hamre finalized the victory with three-straight outs in the seventh. Allegheny's Vradenburg was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits with two walks.
Powell, Fisher, and Asher each recorded two hits for the Big Red in game two, with Fisher leading the trio with two runs scored. Saucedo led the team with two RBIs.
The 2019 season will continue for the Big Red as they advance to next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. The double-elimination tournament will take place next Friday and Saturday, May 3-4.
