ROME, Ga. – Highlighted by a pair of top-10 finishes from Laine Hursh and Sophia Alexander, Denison women's golf tallied a two-day total of 628 to place sixth overall at the 2019 Chick-fil-A Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at the Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga.
Denison finished one stroke ahead of tournament host Berry College (629) in seventh place and was seven strokes back of fifth-place Spring Hill College (621). Oglethorpe captured the team championship with a total score of 611.
Hursh and Alexander led the way for Denison with matching two-day scores of 153 as they finished in a tie for 10th place among a field of 89 golfers. After posting a 76 during the first round, Alexander led the Big Red on Tuesday with a second-round score of 77 (+5) behind four total birdies, including three on the front nine. Hursh hit for par on 10 of her 18 holes during the second round to finish the day with a 79.
Senior Emmy Timberlake also posted a 79 on Tuesday as she finished the tournament with a 36-hole score of 156 in a tie for 20th place, just three strokes back of Hursh and Alexander. Sophomore Megan Munn improved by four strokes during the second round to end the day with an 81 and a 166 for the tournament to land in a tie for 43rd. Freshman Julia Shafir rounded out the DU competitors in 61st place with a two-day total of 172.
Ranked as the 15th-best team in the latest Golfstat Division III Top-25, Denison women's golf closed out their fall season on Tuesday with four finishes in the top-three, including three-straight tournament victories at Ohio Wesleyan, DePauw, and Lourdes University.
