Denison stomps Centre for first win

Carol Allen scored 5 goals in the win over Centre.
Carol Allen scored 5 goals in the win over Centre.

Denison wasted little time kicking the 2015 season into high gear following a 21-2 opening day win over Centre College on Friday afternoon in Danville, Ky.

Centre would score the game's first goal but the Big Red would follow with 12 consecutive goals over the next 20 minutes of first half action.  Carol Allen and Claire Ludlow provided six of the 12 goals as DU outshot Centre 22-9 over the first 30 minutes of play.

Leading 12-2 entering the second half, Denison would hold the opposition scoreless in the final period, holding the Colonels to six shots and two shots on goal.  The DU offense continued to roll with nine goals, five of which made possible by assists from Erin Keller and Whitney Powel.

Powel would lead her team in points, finishing with two goals, five assists and four draw controls.  Allen paced the team with five goals off only five shot attempts.  Keller followed with three goals and three assists while Ludlow and Reid Hirschey each added hat tricks.  Denison's scoring was rounded out by Caludia Rafi (two goals), Lizzy Pellicane (one goal), Becca Jones (one goal) and Halle Walsh (one goal).  In goal, Laura Van Horn stopped four shots from Centre in her 60 minutes of action.

Centre's pair of goals came from Colleen Jackson and Ellen Resinger.

Denison will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 28) when they take on Millsaps in Danville, Ky. at 12 p.m.
