Unbeaten Raiders keep Big Red at bay

Erin Keller led Denison with four goals at Mount Union.
Erin Keller led Denison with four goals at Mount Union.

Mount Union's string of eight-straight goals in the first half would be enough for the Purple Raiders to build a lead and stop the Big Red, 17-11 from Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio.

Denison opened with a pair of goals in the first six minutes of play as Kelsey Wright and Lizzy Pellicane gave the Big Red a 2-0 lead.

Over the next 14 minutes of play, the Radiers pumped in eight goals to take an 8-2 lead.

Denison's Erin Keller would respond with three goals over the final six minutes of the first half. Reid Hirschey also scored off a free position attempt.  DU went into the second half trailing 10-6.

After a yellow card on Mount Union's Madeline Phillips in the first minute of the second half, Denison's Pellicane would score while the Big Red were in man-up, trimming the deficit to three.

Mount Union would answer by scoring six of the next eight goals of the second half, building a 16-9 lead and putting any hopes of a Big Red comeback on ice.

Keller finished with four goals, one assist, four ground balls and two draw controls.  Pellicane scored twice and added an assist. She also tied Keller for the team lead in ground balls with four.  Leah Israel finished with five draw controls and two goals off three shot attempts.

The Purple Raiders got six goals and six draw controls from Taylor Pansyl.  Marjie McNamara and Katherine Doraty also added three goals each.

Denison outshot Mount Union 26-24 but the Raiders' goalie Nikki Bonaduce managed to post 10 saves in her 60 minutes of work.

Mount Union improves to 7-0 while Denison falls to 3-3.  The Big Red will open its home schedule on Thursday (March 26) when they take on Augustana at 7 p.m.
