Reid Hirschey scored 5 goals and added 1 assist in the win over Allegheny.

Denison matched a season-high in goals as the Big Red steamrolled Allegheny, 21-9 on Saturday afternoon in Meadville, Pa.  The win improves Denison's record to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

While the goals would come in bunches for the Big Red, they didn't come early as the Gators jumped out to a 2-1 lead midway through the first half.  Reid Hirschey's goal with 15:27 to play in the first period sparked a four-goal streak for Denison that spanned only two minutes.

Six-straight goals from DU would be answered as Allegheny scored twice, making the score 7-4 with 8:24 to play in the first.  The Big Red would close out the first half with goals from Erin Keller, Claire Ludlow, Claudia Rafi and Hirschey to take a commanding 11-4 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Denison's defensive pressure was turned up a notch as the Gators managed to go just 3-for-9 when clearing the ball.  That helped equate to 13 second half turnovers for Allegheny.  In the second half, Denison would double up Allegheny on the scoreboard, outscoring them 10-5 to set the final at 21-9.

Eight players accounted for Denison's 21 goals as four individuals posted hat tricks.  Hirschey led the scoring with five goals and one assist. She also tied for the team lead with five ground balls.  Keller followed with four goals, two assists and six draws controlled.  Ludlow tallied five points (3 goals, 2 assists) while leading the squad with eight controlled draws.  Rafi posted three goals while Whitney Powel (2 goals, 3 assists) and Carol Allen (2 goals, 2 assists) both enjoyed multi-goal games.  Defensively, Melissa Weinsz matched Hirschey with five ground balls.

Becca Jones posted seven saves for Denison.  The Big Red outshot Allegheny, 40-22 and won the ground ball battle 35-16.  The 35 ground balls are a season-high for Denison.

The Big Red will return to action on Tuesday (April 14) when they host Kenyon College at 5 p.m.
