Denison falls to Fredonia in NCAA second round

Claire Ludlow controlled five draws on Sunday at Fredonia.
Claire Ludlow controlled five draws on Sunday at Fredonia.

Denison's run to the NCAA Division III Tournament came to an end on Sunday as Fredonia bested the Big Red, 10-5 from University Stadium in Fredonia, N.Y.  Denison, who was making the program's 17th NCAA Tournament appearance, ends its campaign with an 11-7 record.  No. 17 Fredonia moves on to regional play on May 16.

The Big Red got off to a strong start, scoring two of the first three goals of the contest.  Reid Hirschey started things off with a nifty goal after a perfect pass from Carol Allen from behind the goal.

Fredonia responded 25 seconds later as Marissa Cussins scored her 57th goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1.

After a Fredonia turnover, Denison's Kelsey Wright fed Whitney Powel for the score, putting DU back on top, 2-1.  Ludlow would win the ensuing draw but after a turnover, Fredonia's Katie Miller was there for the goal.

The Blue Devils would take the lead for good just one minute later when Cussins tallied her second goal of the game after a draw control by Audrey Yokopovich.

Fredonia would take a 4-2 lead as Cussins picked up the hat trick after she forced a turnover on DU's Isabel Swicklik.  Denison would fight right back as Erin Keller scored via an 8-meter attempt after a Fredonia foul.

The score would remain 4-3 until with 12:37 to play in the first half when Kristie Kleine scored to put Fredonia on top, 5-3.

With 12:14 to go, Ludlow would find Hirschey with her second goal of the day and DU would trail the Blue Devils 6-4 at halftime.

In the second half the two teams would each attempt nine shots, but the Big Red went 0-for-4 on free position attempts and that would be the difference as Fredonia held DU to one goal over the final 30 minutes.

Denison's goals were scored by Hirschey (two), Claudia Rafi, Powel and Keller.  Ludlow, Wright and Allen all recorded assists and Ludlow paced the team with five draw controls.  Powel finished as the team leader in ground balls with three.  She also caused two turnovers.

Fredonia got hat tricks from Cussins and Yokopovich.  Kleine finished with two goals and two assists.  Nicole Burrows finished with 12 saves in goal while Denison's goalie, Becca Jones, turned in seven saves while playing all 60 minutes.

The two teams tied in the shot department with 22 apiece.  Fredonia won the ground ball game, 16-14 and both teams committed 15 turnovers.
