ROCHESTER, N.Y.-- Maggie Hoey broke a scoreless tie in the 80th minute of play and that was enough to lead RIT to a 1-0 victory over Denison in the 2018 season opener on Friday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
It was a stalemate until Hoey received a pass from Lauren Zeglen from just beyond the 18-yard box. Hoey put a strong right foot on the ball and sent it into the upper left corner for the lone goal of the match. At first, the shot appeared to have been saved by Denison goalkeeper Patil Tcholakian but following a short meeting between the referee and the linesmen it was ruled that Tcholakian had come down with the ball and her momentum carried it over the goal line.
It wasn't the first time Tcholakian had been challenged. She turned in a tremendous save in the 64th minute. RIT's Monica Polanco had a 1v1 opportunity and Tcholakian made an outstanding stop from point-blank range.
In the first half, RIT held an 8-5 advantage in shots. In the second half, the Tigers outshot the Big Red 6-1. Denison was led in shots by Abby King with two. Madison Smith posted DU's only shot-on-goal in the 16th minute of play. Tcholakian played all 90 minutes and had four saves.
This marked the first-ever meeting between Denison and RIT in women's soccer. Denison will look to rebound on Saturday when they face Nazareth College at 1 p.m.
