GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison women's soccer tallied four, first-half goals and two multi-goal performances from Maggie Armstrong and Liz Gilbert as the Big Red powered past Otterbein University 7-1 on Wednesday night at Barclay-Thomsen Field.

Led by a 14-6 shot advantage from DU in the first half, the Big Red wasted no time with their scoring efforts as the match began. In the eighth minute of play, sophomore Kailey Knopf attacked the Otterbein keeper, Erin Gordon, with a shot from the right side. Off the deflected save by Gordon, junior Claire Kolff accepted the rebound and landed a strike between the posts to take an early 1-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, it was déjà vu for DU as Kelly O'Neill's shot off a free kick was saved off the crossbar by Gordon, but a rebounded put-back by Armstrong extended the Denison advantage to 2-0 at the 12:47 mark.

At 21:28, O'Neill received a second chance at the net, scoring off a pass from freshman Abby King to add to the Big Red's lead, 3-0. Ariel Loevy added to Denison's scoring outbreak in the first half, sending a shot past the goalie to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

Entering the second half, Denison and Otterbein traded shots right from the start, but Gilbert capitalized on her first goal of the season at 49:16 when she crossed her defender in front of the goal box and scored on the right side of the net.

Leading 5-1 in the 60th minute of action, Armstrong welcomed a pass from Gilbert and connected on her second goal of the season to put the Big Red in front, 6-1. Gilbert added an additional goal at 71:30 for her second of the game as the Big Red secured the victory and moved to 2-1 on the year. The win also moves Denison's career record over Otterbein to 17-7-4.

Armstrong finished with two goals on five shots, while Gilbert ended the night with two goals and one assist. The Big Red received multiple shots from six total players, including Gilbert, Armstrong, Loevy, O'Neill, Kailey Knopf and Madison Smith.

Denison's seven goals against Otterbein are the most by the Big Red since Sept. 24, 2014, when DU defeated Earlham College, 7-0.

Keeping with the team effort, the Big Red goalkeeping crew of Patil Tcholakian, Maddie Coyne, and Olivia Robinson combined for 12 saves in 90 minutes of play. Tcholakian led all DU goalies with six saves in 50:56 and earned the win. For the Cardinals, Gordon, Katie Both and Alaina Reher totaled six saves in a full 90 minutes. Gordon was credit with the loss, moving to 1-1 on the season.

The Big Red will continue their five-match homestand this weekend at Barclay-Thomsen Field when they host Buffalo State on Saturday, Sept. 8 and Shenandoah on Sunday, Sept. 9. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
