GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison scored three times in the first half and added one goal via a penalty kick in the second en route to a 4-0 victory over Buffalo State at Piper Stadium.
Due to the heavy rainfall in the area, the match was moved to the artificial playing surface at Piper Stadium and the home team wasted little time. Just 1:33 into the match, Denison took a 1-0 lead when Kailey Knoph scored from eight yards away for her first goal of the season.
The Big Red controlled offensive possession throughout the first half but they didn't put goal No. 2 on the board until the 33rd minute. That developed thanks to an excellent through ball by Maggie Armstrong to Liz Gilbert. The first-year forward settled the ball and scored from just inside the 18-yard box.
DU struck back three minutes later when Armstrong notched her second assist of the day on a pass to Kelly O'Neill who scored from 10-yards. The goal was the second of the season for O'Neill.
The Big Red outshot the Bengals 12-1 in the first half. In the second half, the Big Red held Buffalo State to zero shots and attempted six of their own. Denison's fourth and final goal came in the 88th minute. After Logan Agin was fouled inside the box, Emma Phinney scored via a penalty kick.
Denison held an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Buffalo State goalkeeper Taylor Carillo posted six saves while facing 10 shots-on-goal. Denison goalkeeper Patil Tcholakian played 81 minutes and did not have to make a save. Olivia Robinson played the final nine minutes for DU.
The Big Red improves to 3-1 while Buffalo State drops to 0-3-1. On Sunday (Sept. 9) Denison will host Shenandoah at 1 p.m. That match will also be played on the turf at Piper Stadium.
