AKRON, Ohio-- Denison opened the 2018-19 season by placing fourth out of six teams at the Akron Zips Classic. Denison was the only non-Division I program invited to compete against the likes of Akron, Miami, Cincinnati, Xavier, and Cleveland State. Akron won with 1,259.5 points. Denison ended with 285 points.
Two-time national champion and national record-holder in the 100 breaststroke, KT Kustritz posted a pair of NCAA 'B' cuts on Saturday. Kustritz placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.80 and was sixth in the 200 breast after a time of 2:20.50. Kate Mesaros followed Kustritz in both events. She placed seventh in the 100 breast (1:05.26) and was 12th in the 200 in 2:23.31.
DU had one other NCAA 'B' cut on Saturday night as junior Zoe Whelan touched the wall in 2:05.51 to finish 10th in the 200 fly. Whelan is the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion in the 200 fly and finished 14th in the 100 fly at last year's NCAA Division III Championship.
Kirby also finished 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:05.66) and was 17th in the 100 backstroke (58.50). Hannah Rusinko led Denison with a 10th place finish in the 1,650 free with a time of 17:45.50. Caroline Colville followed in 15th place (18:16.31) and Sydney Lenz took 16th (18:31.77).
Hopkins and Whelan went 13-16, respectively in the 100 fly as Hopkins touched in 57.61 and Whelan finished in 57.79. Denison's scorers were rounded out by Natalie Zaravella in the 400 IM (16th – 4:38.14).
Denison's remaining two relays logged sixth and eighth place finishes. The 400 free relay team of Chiappe, Kustritz, Michaela Morrison and Kirby finished eighth in 3:32.28. Kustritz, Hopkins, Kirby, and Chiappe combined for a time of 1:37.00 in the 200 free relay.
Denison returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 20) when they travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan to take on Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m.
