GAMBIER, Ohio – Denison women's tennis headed to Gambier, Ohio this past weekend to participate in the 2017 Kenyon Invitational. The Big Red competed individuals from Carnegie Mellon University, John Carroll University, Ohio Northern University, the College of Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan University and the hosts, Kenyon College. Denison secured 20 total victories over the two-day tournament and recorded seven of those wins in doubles play.
In singles play, the Big Red had three players finish as runners-up or better in their flights. Natalie Overby didn't drop a single set and won her flight by defeating McKailla Parsons (Ohio Wesleyan) 6-0, 6-0. Lauren Hawley and Megan Hickey went 2-1 in the top two flights of singles play and both brought home second place finishes.
On the doubles courts, the Big Red went 7-4 for the weekend, totaling three, third place finishes and one runner-up. In top flight play, the pair of Hawley and Hickey finished 2-1 and won their third-place match over Joy Li and Morgan Wagers (Wooster) 8-6.
Gramley and Madeline Hart won the first two matches in their flight to come away with a second-place finish. Purnode and Carol Vitellas won their third-place matches over Kaleigh Cummins and McKenzie Wills (Ohio Northern) 8-4, while Lucy Deal and Morgan Arroyo secured the same finish over an Ohio Northern pairing with an 8-2 victory over Macey Camacho and Abigail Carpenter.
Denison finished the weekend with a record of 20-16 in all competitions. The Big Red will travel to Oberlin College this weekend for the 2017 ITA Regional Tournament that will take place this Friday through Monday, September 22-25.
