LAKE NONA, Fla. - The 28th ranked Denison women's tennis team rounded out their spring break trip on Friday afternoon with a 9-0 sweep of No. 39 Wellesley College at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla. The win sends the Big Red to 7-4 on the season after going 3-2 during their trip to Florida. The loss drops Wellesley to 5-3.
Denison's dominance started on the doubles courts, beginning with DU's nationally-ranked top-flight pairing of Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup defeating Justine Huang and Selina Peng, 8-1. On the No. 2 court, Hannah Cianciola and Alex Cash continued their second flight success to improve to 6-3 as a duo after handing an 8-3 loss to Michaela Markwart and Michelle Shen.
In singles play, the Big Red swept through the singles with six-consecutive straight-set victories. In the top flight, Hawley tallied a pair of 6-2 set victories over Huang while Alsup defeated Markwart 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 matchup.
Denison rounded out their fourth 9-0 sweep of the season in the No. 6 singles when Madeline Hart defeated Korina Hernandez in back-to-back tiebreakers, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1).
The Big Red will return to action in Ohio on Tuesday, March 26 when they travel to Gambier for a top-30 matchup with No. 22 Kenyon College.
