The Denison women's indoor track & field team began their 2011 slate on Saturday afternoon with an eighth place finish at the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational hosted by Capital University.
Junior Ani Mutafova (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) led the way for DU with a third place finish in the 800 meters. Mutafova crossed the finish line in 2:29.70 and was less that two seconds behind the winning pace set by Cassie Mattia of Rio Grande.
Mutafova was also a part of Denison's lone first-place finish when she led-off the Distance Medley Relay along with Laura Houcque (Elkhorn, Wis./Evanston Twp. [Ill.]), Ellen Fugate (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Julie Rotramel (Lexington, Ky./Lafayette). The foursome won the relay with a time of 13:56.08.
In the high jump, Andrea Pion (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) placed fifth by clearing 4'7" and junior Ashlee Dickson (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) also turned in a fifth place showing in the pole vault by clearing 8'6".
Denison will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 22) when they host the annual Denison Lid-Lifter from the Mitchell Center.
