The Denison women's indoor track and field team sent three athletes to Division I Kent State this weekend, while the majority of the team competed at the Capital Purple & White Invitational on Saturday.
Senior Tiffany Davis and sophomores Aedin Brennan and Kiki Yewer competed with athletes across all three division of the NCAA at the annual Kent State Golden Flash Gala. On Friday, Brennan was one of 15 athletes to participate in the pentathlon. Of the 15 competitors, 10 were Division I athletes, while Division II and III had five athletes involved. Brennan finished sixth overall and second among Division III athletes with 3,270 points.
After placing 11th in the 60 hurdles (9.83) and ninth in the high jump (5'0.50"), Brennan moved into seventh in the overall standings with a fourth-place finish in shot put after a personal-best throw of 34'2.75". She maintained her spot in the standings through four events with a leap of 16'09.75" in the long jump, landing her in a tie for sixth place. In the final event, the 800-meter run, Brennan finished fourth with a time of 2:28.67. That time earned her 710 points and moved her into sixth place in the final standings.
On Saturday, Davis and Yewer competed in the 60 and 200-meter dash events. Davis finished 10th in the prelims of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.88, while Yewer took 23rd after crossing the finish line in 8.21, which surpassed her previous personal best by five thousandths of a second.
In the 200-meter event, Davis took second behind Kent State's Olivia Hallstein. The DU senior finished the race in 25.31, besting her previous school-record mark of 25.34 set on Feb. 18, 2012 at the Kent State Tune Up. Yewer also posted a personal-best time in the 200 after crossing the finish line in 27.15. The sophomore's time moved her into sixth on the school's top performers list.
At Capital, freshman Anne Lee paced the Big Red. In her first collegiate event, Lee won the triple jump with a leap of 34'2.75". She also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 16'1.50". With those performances, Lee ranks third on the school's top performers list in both events. Freshman Haley Dowdie and junior Jillian Reagan finished five-six in the 600-meter run with times of 1:57.77 and 2:00.84, respectively, while freshman Olivia Ireland took ninth in the 300-meter event with a time of 45.98. The 4x200 relay team of freshman Sarah Hoffman, Ireland, Lee and Dowdie took fourth after crossing the line in 1:55.39.
Denison returns to competition on Jan. 25, 2014 when they host the annual Denison Lid-Lifter at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio. Events are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
