The Denison women's track and field team accumulated 44 points en route to finishing in sixth place at the Kenyon College Classic held on Saturday in Gambier, Ohio.
Senior Kate Benson posted the Big Red's lone victory in the mile with a school-record time of 5:16.43, which bested her previous personal-record time by 10.34 seconds. Benson's mark also eclipsed Abbi Boss' school-record time set on March 8, 2014 by 31 hundredths of a second.
The Big Red also collected 15 points in the high jump with three athletes finishing in the top-6. Sophomore Hannah Hall took second after clearing 5'3.75", while Jessica Nix and Grace Zukowski were fifth and sixth, respectively, with matching marks of 4'7.75".
In other field events, senior Rebecca Fritch finished third in the shot put with a toss of 30'9.25", while junior Anne Lee was fourth in the triple jump with a combined leap of 32'11.75". Freshman Mackenzie Mason also PRed in the pole vault after successfully clearing 8'6" which landed her in seventh place. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Phoebe Osterhout and Claire Barcelo took seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 11:45.54 and 11:46.75. Rounding out the scoring was the 4x400 grouping of Kalani Rose, Benson, Shelby Jude and Sarah Cantley with a seventh-place finish (4:41.35).
Ohio Wesleyan won the event with 128 points, edging the host Ladies by just one point. Wooster (104.5) finished third followed by Waynesburg (57) and Westminster (48.5).
In other competition this weekend, freshman Ajai Brooks and sophomore Arlesha Cospy competed at the Kent State Tune-Up. Brooks had the best showing at Kent State with an eighth-place finish in the 200 dash. The freshman sprinter clocked in with a personal record and the best Division III time at 25.52. Brooks' mark also ranks her second on the school's top performer's list. In addition to her performance in the 200, Brooks also shaved three hundredths off her previous PR in the prelims of the 60 dash at 7.99. Cospy also took 19th in the weight throw with a mark of 38'5.50"
On Friday, senior Aedin Brennan and Hall both competed at the Buckeye Tune-Up hosted by Ohio State. Brennan won the triple jump with a final mark of 38'7.75", while Hall was eighth in the high jump with a mark of 5'2.25".
Denison returns to action on Friday (Feb. 26) when they host their annual Last Chance Meet. Event are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
