DU caps off weekend in North Carolina

The Big Red women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University on Saturday in High Point, N.C.

In the last women's event to go final, the discus, sophomore Arlesha Cospy and senior Rebecca Fritch both turned in personal records. Cospy was seventh with a toss of 149'7" which moved her into the second spot on the Division III national list. It also marked an 8'7" improvement on her previous PR. Fritch finished 20th in the overall standings with a mark of 125'11". That performance bested her previous PR by 4'1".

Senior Aedin Brennan finished fifth out of 19 competitors in the triple jump with a combined leap of 38'3.25", which vaulted her into fifth on the national qualifying list. She also placed 11th in the long jump with a final mark of 17'11.75".  Brennan is currently tied for 10th nationally.

Freshman Ajai Brooks led the Big Red on Saturday with a pair of top-10 finishes. Brooks posted personal records in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. In the 100, the freshman took sixth out of 48 athletes with a time of 12.31 which was three-tenths of a second faster than her previous PR. Roughly two and a half hours later, Brooks returned to the track to finish 10th in the 94-person 200 dash field. Her time of 25.12 was a .14-second improvement from her previous personal-best performance. Brooks now ranks fifth in the 200 and 13th in the 100 in Division III this season.

Sophomore Emily Grabauskas led a trio of DU runners that finished in the top-30 in the 800-meter run. Grabauskas' time of 2:23.17 landed her in 16th place among 71 athletes. Senior Kate Benson followed in 20th place at 2:23.89, while sophomore Phoebe Osterhout was 26th after clocking in at 2:27.93. Junior Shelby Jude (2:34.56) and freshman Kalani Rose (2:35.53) also finished in the top-50.

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Macy Diaz finished third in her heat and 43rd overall with a final time of 1:04.02. Diaz also ran on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that finished 13th and 16th overall, respectively. The 4x100 foursome of Brennan, Diaz, Rose and Brooks took second in their heat with a time of 50.20. In the 4x400, the grouping of Brennan, Diaz, Grabauskas and Brook placed third in heat three with a time of 4:11.93.

Denison returns to action next Saturday at the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. In addition, select DU athletes will compete at the All-Ohio Combined Events Championship hosted by Muskingum University on April 9-10.
