Denison freshman Ajai Brooks set two Denison outdoor records at the 2016 Jesse Owens Classic hosted by The Ohio State University on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
One week after becoming the school record holder in the 100-meter dash, Brooks re-set her own record with a final time of 12.07. That time bested her previous school record by seven hundredths of a second while also landing her in 18th place in the event. Roughly an hour and 45 minutes later, the freshman sprinter became the Denison record holder in the 200 dash after crossing the finish line in 24.48. Brooks' performance eclipsed Tiffany Davis' school record by seven hundredths of a second, while also surpassing her previous personal best by 24 hundredths of a second.
Brooks was one of four athletes competing at the Jesse Owens Classic. On Friday, senior Aedin Brennan placed 15th in the javelin with a mark of 115'5", while sophomore Arlesha Cospy took seventh in the discus with a toss of 137'7". Sophomore Hannah Hall took part in the high jump on Saturday, successfully clearing 5'2.25".
The majority of the women's team traveled to Gambier, Ohio on Saturday for the Kenyon Spring Invitational. As a team, the Big Red finished sixth with 57 points. Senior Rebecca Fritch paced Denison with a school-record performance in the hammer throw. Fritch took fourth in the event with a toss of 125'8", which surpassed Cospy's record by 10 feet. The senior also took third in the discus (120'2") and seventh in the shot put with a heave of 33'11.50", which moved her into ninth on the top performer's list.
Junior Anne Lee also turned in a pair of top-5 finishes. Lee took second in the triple jump with a combined leap of 33'5.75", while her mark of 15'4.25" landed her fifth in the long jump. Senior Emily Lamm placed third in the 1500-meter event with a time of 4:57.23.
The quartet of Jessica Nix, Phoebe Osterhout, Mackenzie Mason and Grace Zukowski turned in fourth-place performances. Nix completed the 100 hurdles in 16.99, while Osterhout turned in a time of 2:24.19 in the 800 run. Mason and Zukowski successfully cleared 8'0" and 4'8.25" in the pole vault and high jump, respectively.
Juniors Claire Barcelo and Molly Korest rounded out the scoring for DU. Barcelo placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a final time of 20:09.73, while Korest took eighth in the event after turning in a time of 21:24.59.
Denison returns to competition next Friday when they host their annual Big Red Invitational. Field events will begin at 3:30 p.m., while the running events are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
