GENEVA, Ohio -- After failing to post a mark in her NCAA debut one year ago, Denison junior thrower Arlesha Cospy overcame a steady rainfall to place 16th in the discus at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Thursday at the SPIRE Institute.
Entering with the 11th-best mark in the country, Cospy seemed to be affected by the inclement weather get the best of her. After fouling on her first attempt, the junior posted her best mark of the day with a toss of 131'6". The Trotwood, Ohio native's performance landed her outside the top nine that qualified for the finals of the event.
Ithaca senior Brandy Smith captured the national championship with a mark of 160'5". Smith's winning toss came on her second attempt of the prelims. Carthage junior Elanta Slowek was second at 154', while Hamline senior Gabby Koel placed third with a final distance of 151'1".
The Big Red will continue competition at the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship on Friday (May 26). Junior Hannah Hall, who is making her third consecutive nationals appearance (second-straight outdoor), will look to post her first All-American performance in the high jump at 10:30 a.m.
