DELAWARE, Ohio – Garnering five, top five finishes and four new personal records, Denison women's track and field traveled to Delaware, Ohio on Friday and Saturday afternoons to compete in the 2018 Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan's George Gauthier Track.
Recording the team's lone individual victory of the meet was senior Arlesha Cospy who placed first in the discus event with a throw of 131'11" (40.21 meters). Freshman Anna Vrancken finished two spots behind her in third place with a distance of 115'6" (35.21 meters). Vrancken also competed in the hammer throw, placing eighth at 109'8" (33.44 meters).
In the javelin throw, senior Jessica Nix tallied a new personal best distance of 78'8" (23.98 meters) to place third overall in the event. Nix also recorded a top 10 finish in the high jump, reaching a height of 4'7.75" (1.42 meters) on her second jump to place seventh, while freshman Danni Gutelius reached the same mark on her first jump to finish in sixth. Hannah Hall had the best finish of all Big Red competitors, placing in second with a 5'1.75" (1.57 meters).
Rounding out the field events was junior Mackenzie Mason in the pole vault where she finished sixth overall with a leap of 10'00" (3.05 meters).
On the track, the Big Red were led by Molly Smith's second place finish in the 800-meter run, logging a time of 2:24.98. Sydney Lerda finished the event less than two seconds behind Smith with a 2:26.96, placing seventh overall.
In the 1,500-meter run, sophomore Erin O'Connor led the pack in seventh place with a time of 5:03.92, while Tommy Solberg logged a new PR of 5:12.86 in 16th place and senior Phoebe Osterhout clocked in at 5:15.48, good for 19th.
Adding to her sixth-place finish in the high jump, Gutelius finished the 400-meter dash with a new personal record of 1:06.01, placing ninth. Sydney Chandler also added a top 10 finish in the 400-meter hurdles, placing in sixth with a time of 1:11.39.
Denison will return Delaware, Ohio next Saturday, April 14 to take part in the 2018 All-Ohio Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University.
