GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison women's track & field recorded seven, top-five finishes on Friday night as they hosted the annual Big Red Invitational on the campus of Denison University in Granville.
The Big Red were led by a pair of event victories from freshman Marija Pavlick and sophomore Molly Smith. In the javelin, Pavlick, who is the school's record holder in the event, took first overall on a maximum effort of 104' (31.70 meters). Fellow freshman Sam Zimmerman followed in fourth on a mark of 91'2" (27.79 meters) while Becca Skolnick placed sixth overall (79'1") and Danni Gutelius landed in seventh (77'2").
Smith garnered Denison's second victory of the night in the 800-meter run when she won the event in 2:22.07. Junior Sydney Lerda followed for DU in seventh after checking in at 2:30.16 while Allie Holmes finished 13th overall at 2:37.29.
The Big Red added two additional top-five performances in the throwing events, led by Abby Reppert in the discus where she placed third overall at 111'4" (33.95 meters). Skolnick took ninth place on a mark of 104'6" (31.85 meters) and Anna Vrancken placed 12th (90'3"). In the hammer throw, Leah Ackerman led DU in fourth place on a throw of 133'2" (40.59 meters). Reppert placed 10th overall (114'6") and Skolnick set a new personal best at 101'5" (30.93 meters) to place 13th overall.
In the shot put, Ackerman finished in sixth overall at 35'9.50" (10.91 meters) and Vrancken followed in 12th (32' - 9.75 meters).
Rounding out the field events for Denison was senior Mackenzie Mason who placed ninth overall in the pole vault on a height of 9'6.25" (2.90 meters). Isabella Luaces took seventh place in the long jump on a final mark of 15'3.25" (4.65 meters). She was followed by Olivia Ewing in 11th place at 14'6.50" (4.43 meters).
Luaces also took part in the 400-meter hurdles to finish fifth overall on a time of 1:13.36.
In the 3,000-meter run, the Big Red was highlighted by freshman Emily Willson who clocked in at a new PR of 11:02.35 to place fourth overall. Her final time also moved her into Denison's top-10 list of all-time personal records. Meagan Balch trailed in sixth place at 11:11.01 and Emma Riordan finished 18th overall at 12:15.75.
The meet was closed out in the 4X400 meter relay when Smith, Lerda, Holmes, and Tommy Solberg finished in fourth after clocking in at 4:31.48.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, April 27 when freshman Ashley Schmoll represents the women's track & field program at the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference Combined Events Outdoor Championships at Oberlin College.
