ALLIANCE, Ohio-- Denison closed out the Mount Union Invitational with a split to move to 1-2 on the season. The Big Red opened with a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20) loss to UMass-Boston but they rebounded with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-15) victory over Thiel College.
In the win over Thiel, Denison jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first set, but the Tomcats responded and held a 23-22 lead in the waning moments of the set. Alex Tubbs tied things up and Isabella Pivec's kill put DU on the doorstep of a set-one win. Following Marija Pavilick's serve, Emma Woerner logged the kill to put Denison on top, 1-0.
In the second and third sets, it was all Denison as the Big Red limited the Tomcats to a .014 attack percentage over that span.
Woerner led Denison with nine kills and finished with 12 digs. Tubbs followed with seven kills and five service aces. Pavlick led the squad with 22 digs and Payton McElfresh followed with 14 digs. Julia Miller had six assists and nine digs.
Against UMass-Boston, Eileen Shi tallied 27 kills with a .477 attack percentage to lead the Beacons to the four-set victory. Woerner and McElfresh paced Denison with seven kills in the match. At the conclusion of the tournament, Woerner was named to the Mount Union Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Denison will travel to Ada, Ohio on Wednesday (Sept. 5) to take on Ohio Northern University at 7 p.m.
