CLEVELAND, Ohio – Denison freshman Payton McElfresh was recognized by the North Coast Athletic Conference on Friday afternoon as the NCAC's Newcomer of the Year as well as earning a spot on the all-conference second team. McElfresh is Denison's first NCAC Newcomer of the Year since 2002 when Katie Quinter was honored with the award.

Chosen as the only freshman on either of the first two all-conference teams, McElfresh currently ranks in the top three on the team in kills (208), total attacks (659), hit percentage (.190), assists (68), service aces (26), and digs (278). The native of Bethel, Ohio also ranked top 20 in the conference in kills, digs, and total points (240.5).

Led by eight multi-kill performances in 2018, McElfresh posted a career-high 17 kills while adding 17 digs at Oberlin on Oct. 16. The freshman also tallied a career-best 25 digs to go along with 10 kills in a home match with DePauw on Sept. 22. She has also posted kill rates of .200 or better in five of her last eight matches.

McElfresh and DU finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 11-15 while going 3-5 in conference play.
