GRANVILLE, Ohio – Led by nine kills from junior Emma Woerner and six block assists from freshman Sidney Gossard, Denison volleyball posted their third-straight win of the season thanks to a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-15) of Wilmington College on Wednesday evening at Livingston Gymnasium.
Combining for a .256 hit percentage throughout the evening, the Big Red battled with the Quakers to open the first set as a DU attacking error kept Wilmington within one, 6-5. Despite the close start, Denison rattled off the next seven points thanks to kills from Woerner, Payton McElfresh, Carly Tenaglia, and Lucy Anderson to take a 13-5 advantage.
Leading 17-13, the Big Red used four attacking errors from Wilmington and kills from Anderson and Sidney Gossard to close out the set on an 8-2 scoring run and win the first set, 25-15.
A .323 kill rate in the second set helped DU begin the frame on a 10-4 scoring run led by five total points from Anderson, Gossard, and Natalie Hutras. Denison forced four WC errors throughout the set, including one from Mariella Szrom to end the period and give the Big Red a 2-0 advantage.
Entering the final set, Denison jumped out to an early 12-5 lead on service aces from Woerner and Sophie Tight, but the Quakers clawed back to win nine of the next 16 points to cut their deficit to 19-14. Leading 21-15, the Big Red tallied the final four points of the match, capitalized by an ace from Woerner that secured DU's sixth win of the season to move to 6-5.
Woerner posted nine kills on 20 attacks for a kill percentage of .300 while adding six digs and six service aces. Gossard finished with seven kills and six block assists, while Anderson chipped in seven digs and five total blocks. Tight led the match with 30 assists.
Taylor McCuistion and Jillian Wesco led the Quakers with a combined 13 kills and added 14 total digs. Summer Wilbur added 15 assists and Karley Schlensker posted a match-best 18 digs.
The Big Red return to action this Saturday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Bexley, Ohio to compete in the Capital University Volleyball Invitational. Denison will square up with host Capital at 10 a.m. before taking on La Roche at 12 p.m.
