GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison volleyball moved to 16-6 on the season and 5-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference on Wednesday evening following a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-14, 25-16) of Oberlin College at Livingston Gymnasium. This marked their 13th straight-set sweep of the season and their 16 wins are the most since 2013 when the Big Red went 20-9.
Earning their third-consecutive victory and moving to 6-1 at home in 2019, the Big Red highlighted their efforts with four players cashing in on hit percentages of .400 or better, including a match-best .571 from freshman Sophie Tight.
Both sides appeared evenly matched in the opening set with the Yeowomen responding from a 3-1 early deficit with kills from Emery Beacom and Maura Gibbs to take the lead 4-3. Trailing 8-7, Denison followed with six of the next eight points on a trio of kills from Emma Woerner and three OC attacking errors.
Back-to-back kills from Gibbs kept Oberlin within one, 20-19, but consecutive Yeowomen errors built DU's lead to 23-21 while Lucy Anderson and Sidney Gossard tallied straight finishes to end the set and gave Denison a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Big Red opened with an early 8-4 advantage on kills from Woerner, Carly Tenaglia, and Payton McElfresh along with a service ace from Anderson. Denison continued their dominance with a 14-6 scoring run that included five kills and four service aces. DU finished the set with 13 kills and five aces as they entered the final set ahead 2-0.
The Big Red remained impressive in the third frame with 13 kills on 28 attempts for a commanding kill rate of .429. Tied at 7-7, Denison followed with six-straight points on finishes from Gossard and Anderson to build a 13-7 advantage. Leading 18-11, kills from Anderson and Alex Tubbs helped DU tack on seven of the final 12 points to secure the match victory and move into second place in the latest NCAC standings.
Anderson finished tied for a match-high with 12 kills while adding three service aces, three digs, and two blocks. Gossard followed with nine finishes and a .409 kill rate while Woerner chipped in eight kills for a .444 hit percentage, two aces, and 11 digs. Tight turned in an all-around performance with a .571 hit rate on four kills with 29 assists, and 12 digs. Jenna Corrao led the night with 16 digs.
Oberlin's Natasha Radic tied for the match-lead with 12 kills while Beacom trailed with 10 finishes. Samantha Lam paced the Yeowomen with 32 assists and Zoe Kuzbari posted 12 digs.
Denison will round out their home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they host Allegheny College at 1 p.m. on senior day where they will recognize seniors Katie Aucamp and Alex Tubbs prior to the start of the match.
