The Denison men's and women's cross country team posted very similar results at the Kenyon Quad meet on Thursday evening in Gambier, Ohio. Both the men and the women placed their top six runners in the top-12 in the overall standings and each squad landed three runners in the top five.
On the men's side, senior Dee Salukombo finished second with a time of 16:15.31 but led all collegiate runners at the meet. The only competitor faster than Salukombo was Brent Martin who posted a time of 16:10.31 while running unattached.
Trailing Salukombo by 27 seconds and placing third in the standings was junior Chad Kosanovich. Fourth place went to Kenyon's Patrick Meyers and fifth place was held down by Big Red senior Alexander Chappars in 17:01.08. The top-12 was rounded out by John Williamson who took ninth, Chris Dunn who placed 10th and Steven Johnson who took 12th.
The Denison women were led by senior Ani Mutafova and junior Michelle Clark who placed second and third, respectively. Mutafova finished four seconds behind the pace set by Kenyon's Jenn Willett. She finished the 4K course in 15:34.66 while Clark checked in with a time of 15:36.57.
Checking in with a fifth place finish was senior Victoria Pottieger who crossed the finish line in 15:59.44. Sophomore Olivia Galano, who last year at this time was playing field hockey for the Big Red, placed seventh in her first collegiate meet after crossing in 16:09.24. The top-six for the DU women were closed out by junior Anne McGinty (10th) and first-year Riley Sechrist (12th).
Both of Denison's teams will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 10) when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for the 2011 Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship.
