SPRINGFIELD, Ohio-- Denison women's cross country opened the 2017 season with a first place finish at the Wittenberg Invitational hosted by the Tigers at Snyder Park. Four Big Red runners placed in the top nine, helping them to a team total of 33 points. That allowed them to outdistance Earlham College by nine points. Wittenberg took third with 49 points while Wilberforce (131) and Central State (135) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Leading the way for Denison was sophomore Erin O'Connor who posted a time of 20:19.6, just 1.9 seconds off the winning pace set by Wittenberg's Alexis Gray. This marked the best overall finish in O'Connor's career. She took third place at last year's Wooster-Denison Dual.
First-year Isabelle Cannon followed in fourth place, crossing the finish line in 20:29. In fifth place, senior Emily Grabauskas logged a time of 20:32.8. Denison's quartet of top-10 finishers was rounded out by freshman Sarah Radziewicz who finished in 20:52.0.
Denison's scoring was rounded out by Emma Riordan who placed 14th with a time of 21:49.5. Caroline Bearce was sixth for DU in 21:51.5 and Sydney Lerda took seventh on the team and 17th overall in 22:10.9. Senior Phoebe Osterhout checked in 21st in the field of 54 with a time of 22:42.6.
The Big Red returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 9 when they compete at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational in Delaware, Ohio.
